Downloaded this yesterday and was instantly addicted. Tall Chess is named for its unique game board, which has rectangular tiles instead of square so it better fits the iPhone screen. The first thing that got me was the design. I am definitely one of those people that buys things because of the label (wine especially) and this app is no exception. Super cute graphics. The clincher was how it subtly teaches you the basic workings of chess (how the pieces move). Chess isn’t something I play with regularity so I often forget which piece does what, and Tall Chess highlights the tile green if you can move the piece, and red if not. There are no annoying popups, and you almost forget that it’s guiding you at all.

If you like musicals and Johnny Depp, this is so your scene. Cry Baby is a 1990 film by John Waters, of the original Hairspray fame. It has 1950’s style, rockabilly and sugar pop retro music, Ricki Lake and an ex-porn star. This is my favorite song and scene, if you’re interested.
